Presentation Dinner 12.11.21

Friday Evening brought the 2021 season to a close. Forrester Park hosted the Maldon Croquet Club awards evening. After a delightful meal organised by Mary, thanks were given to the form Chairperson, Gill Stone in thanks of her time given over the years that the club has been based at Forrester Park.

Events then proceeded onto the trophy presentations for tournament winners. Georgie Clark Memorial Vase – Michael Larger, The Forrester Plate Doubles – Roger Pond and Graham Parker & finally, The Covid Handicap Trophy – Tony White. Award presentations were followed by a raffle with prizes donated by members.

Finals Day 25.9.21

After an event-filled year with 3 inter-club tournaments having been run this year, Finals Day brought 2 of 3 tournaments to a close with the Georgie Clark Level Play Tournament having been completed by Michael Larger and Al Brown. This game saw Michael take victory.

That left The Covid Handicap Tournament and Forrester Plate Level Play Doubles Tournament. The Handicap game was played first with Tony White and Graham Parker having successfully won their earlier blocks and then having come the top two players of the play-off block. After a tough fought game, Tony White came out victorious with a final score of 7-5.

Graham then went on to play his second finals match of the day, this time partnered by Roger Pond. They were facing one of last year’s champions – Martyn Hardy-King and his partner, Barry Keusch. Both teams put in an amazing effort. The victory went to Graham and Roger with a score of 7-4.

Roll-up play continued until it was time for an outdoors barbecue lunch at the Forrester Park Club House where, not only croquet players visited, but also 3 of our members jolly canine companions!

A big well done goes out to all the people who have worked to help organise these tournaments and collate scores and results over the course of the summer season. Thanks also goes to those involved in organising and setting up the Finals Day and lunch. It was the first time in which a Finals Day has been held like this and it was, undoubtedly, a great success!

Maldon Lakeside vs Southchurch

Tuesday 24th August saw Maldon Lakeside’s final EACF tournament match of the season against Southchurch. The players travelling to Southchurch were Peter, Graham, Shirley and Tony.

The day started with two doubles games in which Maldon did not have the best start, both games being lost 7-5. Following on from this, the singles games began; at this point Maldon started to make a comeback taking all 4 matches! This winning streak continued in the second round of games with another clean sweep by Maldon. At the break for lunch, the score stood at 8-2 to Maldon. With 8 more games to play, Maldon only needed 2 more wins to secure victory.

After a series of hard-fought games, Maldon came out victorious with a final score of 12-6 with hoops scored 115 for Maldon and 90 for Southchurch, proving how close the matches had been.

The Maldon team would like to say thank you to the host club for being excellent welcoming hosts and a thank you to the timekeepers and scorers for the day who did an amazing job of keeping things running smoothly efficiently!

Maldon Lakeside Vs Chelmsford

Maldon Lakeside, represented by Karen Davies, Sue Jackman, Graham Parker and Tony White, travelled to Writtle on 20 August to play Chelmsford in the East Anglian Handicap league. 

Lakeside leapt into an immediate lead when Chelmsford had to forfeit a doubles match because one of their players got his dates mixed up and was very late in arriving. But Chelmsford won the other doubles and 5 of the 8 singles games in the first two rounds to lead 6 – 4 at the lunch break.  The gap widened after lunch with Lakeside only winning 1 of the first 4 games.  Lakeside could still have drawn the match by winning all 4 games in the final round, but in the event only won 1, leaving the final match score at Chelmsford 12, Lakeside 6. 

The hoop score was 103 to 91 to Chelmsford, reflecting some very close games. Three went to the golden hoop and 2 were timed out with Chelmsford winning 6 – 5 in both.    Lakeside certainly had their moments, but overall were clearly not as good as the home team on lawns that were rather more finely manicured than the ones Lakeside were accustomed to.
